Wool Wood and Whiskey x RW+SS

In the early Spring of 2011 I became acquainted with a gentleman by the name of Joe Conway who started a site called Wool Wood and Whiskey. At first glance I realized that Mr. Conway and I share a mutual love for all types of outdoor endeavors namely surfing and skateboarding, and for repurposing or salvaging classic American workwear garments and Wool Coats (especially old Woolrich and Pendletons). As I delved deeper into his site i realized what an accomplished author and all around waterman he is. I reached out to have a chat with him and it didn't take long for us to realize that we have several mutual friends within the surf, skate, and design worlds. Joe's site is heavily influenced by the rustic natural beauty of coastal Maine where he dwells, and by the worlds of literature and design with which he surrounds himself. In short he's a Rad Cat and I am beyond stoked to present our first Collaboration.  The Northern Lights hats are of utmost limit (only 8 available) and in true form are made from "Old Man Style" hats with vintage patches. To claim yours email roguesurf@gmail.com or call 843.737.2550.

Price: $29 USD

PS- Thank you Joe for your friendship and constant inspiration, cheers!

Rogue Wave Hits Billy Reid Tomorrow Sept. 6th 6-9 PM

On a cold February day back in 2009 my wife (sweet Sarah J) and I stumbled into Billy Reid's Bond Street store in NYC and we were instantly greeted with the same warm Southern hospitality to which we are accustomed back home in Charleston. This was refreshing to me as I had to that point not spend much time in the Big Apple. As I was shown around their beautifully appointed store and offered a complimentary Bourbon I instantly fell in love both with their garments and aesthetic, and I had to know more about the man behind the brand. Little did I know then that Billy Reid would become a huge inspiration for Rogue Wave. I was pleased to find out that they had a store in my home town, so as soon as I returned home I walked in and introduced myself to their staff. Later that year I met Billy during an event in his store where he selected a pocket square for my suit and gave me the simple advice, "ALWAYS BE BOLD". That moment was a turning point for me and became a new source of inspiration as I began planning our brand and our own store. Fast forward a year later to the summer of 2010, we were kindly invited to put on a pop up shop at Billy's store at 150 King Street (lower King) in downtown Charleston where we showcased the first batch of Gato Heroi surfboards to ever hit Eastern Shores. At this point if you are still reading and are not connecting the dots between fine men's clothing and surfing well, take a look back at Phil Edwards or Miki Dora... That was the year that Billy won the CFDA Emerging Menswear Designer of the Year award and did his first colab with Levis. Tomorrow night we will be back, and this year Billy was honored by the CFDA as the 2012 Menswear Designer of the Year. Much has changed in just two years. Billy currently has stores from NYC to Austin, TX with rumors that they are planning to open a San Francisco location in the near future. As you can imagine we are honored and very excited to be invited back for another pop up tomorrow night. Please join us tomorrow to preview Billy's new Fall Collection and our Rogue Wave Vault Collection of vintage garments and other dry goods. There will be great people, drinks (read bourbon), and music by Ryan Bailey. If you're new to their shop don't worry we promise you'll enjoy yourself, just tell them Rhett sent ya!

PS- Billy, Thank you for the advice and inspiration. I promise to do my best!!!

The Littlest Rogue

I don't usually write like this but I have to share with you one of the most memorable days of my life. You see, yesterday started out like most Sundays in the Boyd household. We slept in as much as our 2 year old will allow, followed by a quick breakfast and then off to church. The message  this Sunday was centered around family which set the tone for what became the most memorable Sunday I've had in a long time. After lunch we all settled in for a nap, one of my favorite times of the week ha! We awoke around 2pm and got ready for our family adventure, as every Sunday in the Boyd household is Family Adventure Day. The last few months have been trying in our family so honestly we didn't put much thought into this particular outing and decided to just go to one of the familiar county park playgrounds that we've visited countless times in the last 2 years since our son Finley was born. Somehow, while en route we decided to go to the beach instead. Maybe it was because that way we'd save the $2 park entry fee (don't judge) or maybe I talked my wife into it, however it happened, we changed course and struck out for 7th Street at Folly Beach. I've surfed here often in the 5 years that we've lived in Charleston. Little did I know that this would be the day I've been waiting for for the last two years. Little did I know that it would be the day that my 2 year old son Finley got to ride his first waves with his papa.

You see, I am blessed in that owning Rogue Wave Surf Shop affords me time to surf most mornings during the week, so I normally devote weekends to family and forsake mother ocean's call. On this particular outing we had no intention of surfing so leaving the house I didn't have on trunks, contact lenses, or even a towel. I did however have strapped to the top of our Land Cruiser (lovingly dubbed LC, pronounced El-See) a huge log a friend made for me. As soon as we stepped onto the sand I instinctively discerned the conditions of small glassy peelers, and light off shore winds as being the perfect opportunity to initiate our little man into his lifelong journey of becoming Seaworthy. Even without contacts in I could tell that the waves were magical. I expressed my desire to my wife and she gave her blessing to take our only son into the wild sea. From the first moment to the last of the session he constantly  smiled, laughed and giggled! I couldn't be more proud of, honored by, and full of love for my son. We experienced pure joy as we glided into waves together, Finley firmly planted on the front of the board squealing with delight.

I'm still Glowing after riding waves with my son. This was a huge milestone for us as a family and for him as he completed his first right of passage toward becoming seaworthy. As I mentioned the past few months have been tough yet the God we serve has been good to us. Through the simple joy of riding waves with my son God spoke to the deepest place in my heart to let me know  For these beautiful memories I am eternally grateful. We have officially created the Littlest Rogue so look for him in your local line up soon, that little beach break pig blaster. I love you Finley, Papa is so proud of you!!! I look forward to sharing many more beautiful memories and shredding millions more waves with you!

Surf Junkie

Our friend Kevin Butler has an art show coming up on August 25th in Culver City, CA. His art prints are whimsical drawings of rad cars with rad surfboards on them, pretty cool huh??? Playful and fun are the two words I most use to describe his work. I love the way his drawings reflect the personality of their owners.

We were fortunate to snag a limited number of his prints so reach out if you would like one. Only 5 available!

Kevin is also the first-ever winner of our Sick Pic contest. We had loads of great entries but we had to give it to a guy who charges head + hollow beach break on a doyle and makes it!!! So, if you're near Culver City on August 25th be sure to go to Kevin's art show, and if you can't make the show come here to grab one of his prints and be sure to check out his blog rad cars with rad surfboards on them

Surfboard Design And Construction by James Kinstle

Mr. James Kinstle crafted one of the most comprehensive manuals ever written on surfboard design and construction. It's been out of print for ages which makes it worth it's weight in gold. This rare gem is truly a must have for the complete surf library. It's filled with excellent diagrams of planing shapes and types of waves. If you plan to build a board or just want to know more about board hydrodynamics this is indispensable reading. It's purely brilliant. We only have one copy so if you need it call or email us.

The Mechanic's Daughter x Rogue Wave

For the past 9 months I have had an amazing intern by the name of Ms. Monique "Mo" Araujo, aka The Mechanic's Daughter. Mo has helped with the inception and execution of numerous projects and events here at the shop and has been a huge asset to Rogue Wave to say the least. Next month she will graduate from The Art Institute of Charleston with her BA in Fashion and Retail Management and we are so happy for her to begin a new chapter in her creative journey. In honor of Mo, we wanted to show off some amazing pieces that she has produced for us. If you are familiar with Rogue Wave you know that we have a penchant for American work wear. As we began to collect VTG pieces and re-invision them with the Rogue Wave touch, Mo was the natural choice to make our vision a reality. Here are some sneak peeks of what we have in the shop. Each piece if one of a kind so please let us know if you would like one. Congratulations Mo, we love you!!!

Rogue Wave history lesson courtesy of Hydrodynamica

The paipo board is the most ancient of the Planing Totems. There are historic accounts of these boards being ridden prone and while kneeling from West Africa to Tahiti and of course Hawaii. The paipo’s main function was as a small board to swim and bodysurf with. In Hawaii the paipo was the first board kids rode when they began to surf. In Waikiki during the classic beach boy era from the 1920s through the 1960s paipo riding blossomed on plywood boards made from the surplus scrap wood of Honolulu’s 20th century construction boom. The Kuhio beach groin, known locally as “The Wall” became the epicenter of the paipo scene in the 1950s and 60s. Standing on a paipo was then considered the ultimate at the Wall, and Hawaiian surfers like Valentine Ching mastered the art of stand-up paipo in the fifties. From the Waikiki paipo school emerged some of the most influential surfers of the 20th century: Rabbit Kekai, Wally Froiseth, Donald Takayama, David Nuuhiwa, Reno Abellira, Eddie and Clyde Aikau, Jeff Ching, Buttons Kaluhiokalani, Larry Bertlemann, and many other Hawaiian surfers cut their teeth on paipo boards. This familiarity with short planing boards helped these surfers played a major role in the development of the surf/skate style that became prevalent in the 1970s.

Iron & Resin now available at Rogue Wave

Born in a small, Southern California, blue-collar beach town, graced with world class point breaks and seaside racetracks, where ghosts of a once towering oil industry still linger in the shadows. Iron & Resin is the brainchild of several friends who, after decades of collective experience building successful clothing brands, decided to turn back the clock and start anew. The result is a small, hand built collection of goods that draws heavily upon the founder’s own lifestyles and experiences.

Forged in California...
In a mass produced, disposable world, Iron & Resin is a product of “one-off” culture. Where men still build, by their own hands, the craft they ride, be it water or land. Our goods are carefully hand crafted and printed one at a time in California.

Sneak Peek...

I have to give credit where credit is due. This week we've been overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of our friends. It's one thing to offer to do something nice for someone, but it's a "whole 'nother deal" to actually come through and give of your time and resources to help someone on a project. That being said, we wanted to give you a preview of an upcoming look book we're working on. These images were shot on location at our store last Saturday by our dear friend Austin Dandridge. Austin just moved back to town from the Big Apple and we are stoked to have him! When he isn't shredding tasty peelers he can be found in the good company of E House Studios where he develops beautiful websites, makes rad films, and captures people's souls via photographs. We are thankful for his friendship and honored to have him help us with this project. In the company of Mr. Dandridge, was our new favorite stylist Mr. Mike Grady. Mike and I met last summer here at the shop, and had a great chat, and I am so thankful that our paths crossed again. Mike came on as the stylist for this shoot and after a discussion of what our basic look usually entails, he began to work his magic. This young man is talented far beyond his years. Like Austin, Mike as well did a stint in the Big Apple, where he worked as a stylist for Levis. In case you didn't realize it, that's pretty BAD ASS!!! We're stoked that he also returned to the Holy City to spice things up here. Mike's creative "eye" and attention to detail are exquisite. These two Gentlemen are an excellent team and I hope to work with both again very soon. If you have a chance to work with them, know that you will be blown away by their creative ability, humble spirit (which is rare in the design world), and iron clad work ethic. In short these guys can size up a situation in a flash, create a game plan and execute it flawlessly. If you have any needs within the realm of Web Design, Videography, or photography please reach out to Austin. If you have any Styling needs, be it Home, Office, Fashion, Retail, Photography etc..... please reach out to Mike. Like me, you will be blown away by their kindness and thrilled with the end product!!! From the bottom of my heart, thank you guys!

PS- Our handsome model is Mr. Josh Pierce. He is 6'0 tall and ripped. And as you can see, he looks amazing in anything he wears, sooooo if you need a model he is your man! Oh, and yes ladies he is single... We love you Josh!!!

Sneak Peek: RW+SS x Charleston Magazine

Name: Rhett Lightfoot Boyd, Jr.

Occupation: Owner of Rogue Wave Surf Shop, 69 Spring Street Charleston, SC

What I like: I like contrast: juxtaposing items of timeless style—bowties and work boots—items that are made to last and are functional for the lifestyle of the individual, favoring products made right here in the good ‘ole US-of-A.

What I hate: Hate is such a strong word...I dislike clothes that are too pretty to wear at the beach.

Style is: Style is a reflection of who you are as a person. It’s not just the clothes you wear, but the way you move through life in them. It’s in the details. I prefer mine to be understated, communicating a quiet sophistication.

Beauty is: I believe that a person’s heart and not their appearance is what makes them beautiful; beauty is defined by action, not appearance.

My style is: My style is best described as “Hemingway Goes Surfing”, inspired by the ruggedness of classic garments by Pendleton, Filson, and Barbour, worn by sportsmen and adventurers for more than 100 years, and the casual simplicity of 1960s California Surf Culture. The result is an amalgamation of timeless styles creating a fresh new look for the surf adventurer in all of us.

My Signature Item is: Custom-made surfboards and small batch surf lifestyle attire.

One trend I will never follow is: Below the knee camo board shorts... yikes!
